Educational concerts are held annually in Johannesburg, Haenertsberg and various other centres around the country including Howick and Eldorado Park, and reach about 8000 learners from nearly 80 schools throughout South Africa. These concerts range from talks by composers and performers, to puppet shows and introductions to the orchestra. They are performed at both junior school and high school level, and reach learners from ages 6 - 19.
The introduction to the orchestra is to introduce the children to classical music, the orchestral families and the individual instruments. We aim to encourage and develop a new audience, and these concerts allow an easy and accessible entry into the orchestra and classical music. To broaden the experience of the arts we have, on occasion, joined up with SA Ballet Theatre, and Johannesburg Youth Ballet to give a more visual element to the concerts. Well-known personalities have also narrated orchestral stories, such as Peter & the Wolf, The Musicians of Bremen and Tintinyane.
These concerts are generously supported by Rand Merchant Bank.
